Ladies and Gentlemen,

I hope that all of you have enjoyed your spring and I hope you are preparing for this upcoming Fall.  It is a very interesting time for College Soccer.  Below are a few comments to give everyone an update as to how things stand right now.  If you have any concerns, questions, comments, complaints, please email me or anyone on the board so that we can answer you.

ASSIGNING  --
Wayne has assigned all the games for the schedules that he has received.  There are still games from the Community colleges and reserve games that have not been sent to Wayne.  As soon as those games are received, he will assign them.  There have been some comments about the number of games that people have received, please remember that OCSOA is responsible for Hiram, Wooster Men and Oberlin Men, which we had in the past.  Also Kim Vieira handles the GLIAC.  Since we have a few less schools than last year, we have a few less assignments to make.

FITNESS EXAM –
The exam is coming up June 26th, 9:00am at Tri-C West.  Bill Nest is in charge and this is for the fitness run Only.  We will have one more scheduled Fitness opportunity on August 8th.  If you cannot attend either, PA West has one or two more this summer or you can make arrangements with Bill to meet you at your expense, $35.  There has been a change in one of the four tests, the AR exam is now a stop, start and change directions event rather than the old one of 50 straight meters.  It is a more difficult test, I have done it a couple of times and it has added around 3.5 seconds to my old time.

MEETING REQUIREMENTS --
In an effort to add more opportunities to satisfy the requirement, there will be a Ref Night at the Crew in July14   th.  Also, Akron’s High School Group is meeting at the University of Akron this fall and one of the meetings will be in conjunction with the Akron Zips Soccer Team, structured like the Crew Night, meeting with the refs before and after and watching the match.  Tentatively, Sept 19 is the date.   More to follow.

ORGANIZATION --
There seems to be a number of things floating around about NOCSOA and whether it will be dissolved into OCSOA.  There is nothing going on to suggest that.  This past winter, NCAC decided to go with a conference assignor and OCSOA was chosen.  The OAC was looking into doing the same thing, thinking NOCSOA and OCSOA was one group.  After a number of meetings with Tim Gleason, it was decided to keep both assignors doing the job.  But, Gleason was very clear that we should be one organization OR he would chose one assignor for the OAC.  He gave no indication which assignor he would use, nor would he guarantee he would not go to an outside assignor, i.e. Kim Vieira or Steve Siomos, etc.  It MAY be in our members best interest to explore forming one group in Ohio.   I have spoken with many of the long standing members about the issues that caused the split in the first place and the overriding issue was that ALL the meetings, written and fitness exams were taking place in Columbus or Dayton, hardly something that we can’t overcome with regional events.  The assigning issue, was fairly non existent.  So, we are exploring an organization that will allow for regional Meetings and EQUAL representation on the Overall Board for the first couple of years.

This is probably enough for right now, Cindy and Brian have another 10 potential new members going through he process.  If you have not contacted Kathleen Dolan about being a member of OCSOA this year, at no charge, you should do so.  August 8th is the Rules Interp, written and fitness exam. Finally, if you are interested in going to the NISOA Annual Convention July 15 – 18, please let us know.

Thanks for your time.

Dusty Matthews

North Coast Athletic Conference | Print |
March 3, 2010

Dear NOCSOA and OCSOA members -

As we approach the 2010 college soccer season, we want to let you know of several changes that will impact our two organizations.

The North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) has hired the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Officials Association (OCSOA) to coordinate its assignments for the 2010-2011 school year.  All seventeen programs will now have their home soccer matches assigned by Rizal Milliken of OCSOA.  This includes Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College (men only), Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster.  Game fees are now $175 and $135.  Rizal and the OCSOA Board will partner closely with Wayne Wilson and NOCSOA's Board to ensure that the best available officials are assigned to all matches.  In the spirit of cooperation, any NOCSOA member who wishes to become an OCSOA dual member and be eligible for assignments for the 2010 season may do so for no dual membership fee.  NOCSOA members who wish to become dual members of OCSOA should contact Kathleen Dolan at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Membership (dual or full) is not a guarantee of game assignments.

As more conferences explore the designated sport assignor concept, it becomes increasingly important that we share our talent and our resources.  As two chapters that still have the rare luxury of assigning games in our areas, we must band together to promote our own members to client schools.  These alliances will require more travel and greater flexibility on the part of our members - we hope you will help us meet these challenges by stretching beyond your former comfort zones.  Without your cooperation, both chapters are at risk of losing all match assignment privileges to independent contractors who hold no ties or loyalties to our chapters.  Thank you, in advance, for remembering the higher purpose you serve in your role as an intercollegiate soccer official.

Sincerely,

Dusty                                                 Kathleen

P.S. Reminder:  the NOCSOA and OCSOA will hold a joint workshop on Saturday, March 27 in Delaware, OH on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.  The agenda for the day includes a NISOA Town Hall Meeting, two Referee Workshops and an Assessor Clinic.  Lunch will be provided but RSVPs are required.  Please let either Dusty or Kathleen know of your plans to attend.
