Ladies and Gentlemen, I hope that all of you have enjoyed your spring and I hope you are preparing for this upcoming Fall. It is a very interesting time for College Soccer. Below are a few comments to give everyone an update as to how things stand right now. If you have any concerns, questions, comments, complaints, please email me or anyone on the board so that we can answer you. ASSIGNING -- Wayne has assigned all the games for the schedules that he has received. There are still games from the Community colleges and reserve games that have not been sent to Wayne. As soon as those games are received, he will assign them. There have been some comments about the number of games that people have received, please remember that OCSOA is responsible for Hiram, Wooster Men and Oberlin Men, which we had in the past. Also Kim Vieira handles the GLIAC. Since we have a few less schools than last year, we have a few less assignments to make. FITNESS EXAM – The exam is coming up June 26th, 9:00am at Tri-C West. Bill Nest is in charge and this is for the fitness run Only. We will have one more scheduled Fitness opportunity on August 8th. If you cannot attend either, PA West has one or two more this summer or you can make arrangements with Bill to meet you at your expense, $35. There has been a change in one of the four tests, the AR exam is now a stop, start and change directions event rather than the old one of 50 straight meters. It is a more difficult test, I have done it a couple of times and it has added around 3.5 seconds to my old time. MEETING REQUIREMENTS -- In an effort to add more opportunities to satisfy the requirement, there will be a Ref Night at the Crew in July14 th. Also, Akron’s High School Group is meeting at the University of Akron this fall and one of the meetings will be in conjunction with the Akron Zips Soccer Team, structured like the Crew Night, meeting with the refs before and after and watching the match. Tentatively, Sept 19 is the date. More to follow. ORGANIZATION -- There seems to be a number of things floating around about NOCSOA and whether it will be dissolved into OCSOA. There is nothing going on to suggest that. This past winter, NCAC decided to go with a conference assignor and OCSOA was chosen. The OAC was looking into doing the same thing, thinking NOCSOA and OCSOA was one group. After a number of meetings with Tim Gleason, it was decided to keep both assignors doing the job. But, Gleason was very clear that we should be one organization OR he would chose one assignor for the OAC. He gave no indication which assignor he would use, nor would he guarantee he would not go to an outside assignor, i.e. Kim Vieira or Steve Siomos, etc. It MAY be in our members best interest to explore forming one group in Ohio. I have spoken with many of the long standing members about the issues that caused the split in the first place and the overriding issue was that ALL the meetings, written and fitness exams were taking place in Columbus or Dayton, hardly something that we can’t overcome with regional events. The assigning issue, was fairly non existent. So, we are exploring an organization that will allow for regional Meetings and EQUAL representation on the Overall Board for the first couple of years. This is probably enough for right now, Cindy and Brian have another 10 potential new members going through he process. If you have not contacted Kathleen Dolan about being a member of OCSOA this year, at no charge, you should do so. August 8th is the Rules Interp, written and fitness exam. Finally, if you are interested in going to the NISOA Annual Convention July 15 – 18, please let us know. Thanks for your time. Dusty Matthews |
